Clarity Beats Pressure
I've made very few good decisions under pressure.
That may sound strange as a founder, but it's probably one of the most important things I've learned.
When things get difficult, my first instinct today is actually to create some distance. I'll go for a run, take the dog for a walk or spend time with my family. Not because the problem disappears, but because it stops my thoughts from circling around the same solution.
I've also stopped making important decisions on the same day. Sleeping on it has become one of my most valuable habits. Interestingly, I learned that during my time in the Navy, where major decisions were rarely made in the heat of the moment.
The next step is usually a conversation. My wife has probably heard more business ideas than she ever wanted to. My colleagues, shareholders and close friends often see things I don't because they're not emotionally attached to the decision.
And then, after all the analysis, I usually trust my gut.
Not instead of the facts.
Because of them.
I've learned that the best decisions are the ones where data, experience and intuition all point in the same direction. They also have to fit who you are. Your values. Your DNA. Because if they don't, they'll probably be difficult to sustain over the long run.
That is what helps me navigate uncertainty.
It doesn't guarantee that I'll always make the right decision.
But it helps me make decisions I won't regret.
What is one habit that helps you think clearly under pressure?
